A FACTOR ANALYSIS OF SUPERMARKET MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
King, Robert P.; Jacobson, Elaine M..
Empirically based management practice indices are constructed using results from factor analysis of data from 344 stores in the 2000 Supermarket Panel. These indices are compared to six management indices based on expert opinion. The empirical indices group variables differently and provide a more compact summary of supermarket management practices.

Accuracy of Numerical Solution to Dynamic Programming Models AgEcon
King, Robert P.; Lohano, Heman D..
Dynamic programming models with continuous state and control variables are solved approximately using numerical methods in most applications. We develop a method for measuring the accuracy of numerical solution of stochastic dynamic programming models. Using this method, we compare the accuracy of various interpolation schemes. As expected, the results show that the accuracy improves as number of nodes is increased. Comparison of Chebyshev and linear spline indicates that the linear spline may give higher maximum absolute error than Chebyshev, however, the overall performance of spline interpolation is better than Chebyshev interpolation for non-smooth functions. Two-stage grid search method of optimization is developed and examined with accuracy analysis....

ADOPTION OF ECR PRACTICES IN MINNESOTA GROCERY STORES AgEcon
Phumpiu, Paul F.; King, Robert P..
Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is an industry-wide, collaborative initiative to re-engineer the grocery supply chain. This report presents findings from a study of ECR adoption in Minnesota grocery stores. Data were collected through interviews with managers of forty stores that are broadly distributed over store sizes, locations, and organizational forms. The interviews focused on business practices and technologies related to inventory management and ordering, shelf-space allocation and product assortment decisions, and product pricing and promotions. Findings are presented from three distinct perspectives: (1) stores grouped by location (metro and out- state), (2) stores grouped by organizational form (corporate chain, independent chain, and...

Agricultural Cooperatives I: History, Theory and Problems AgEcon
Ortmann, Gerald F.; King, Robert P..
This paper presents the principles of cooperation and briefly describes the history and development of agricultural cooperatives in developed and less-developed countries, with particular emphasis on South Africa. A new Cooperatives Act, based on international principles of cooperation, was promulgated in South Africa in August 2005. The theory of cooperatives, and new institutional economics theory (NIE) (including transaction cost economics, agency theory and property rights theory) and its applicability to the cooperative organizational form, are also presented, as are the inherent problems of conventional cooperatives, namely free-rider, horizon, portfolio, control and influence cost problems caused by vaguely defined property rights. An analysis of...

Agricultural cooperatives II: Can they facilitate access of small-scale farmers in South Africa to input and product markets? AgEcon
Ortmann, Gerald F.; King, Robert P..
The objective of this research is to investigate whether agricultural cooperatives can facilitate smallholder farmer access to input and product markets. Farmers in two case study communal areas of KwaZulu-Natal face high transaction costs as reflected primarily in their low levels of education and literacy, lack of market information, insecure property rights, poor road and communication infrastructure, and long distances to markets. Analysis of the reasons why cooperatives were originally established in various parts of the world suggests that most of the causes (such as poverty, market failure and high transaction costs) also apply to the study farmers, as do the seven international principles of cooperation. Smallholder farmers in both case study...

An Incentive System for Salmonella Control in the Pork Supply Chain AgEcon
Backus, Ge B.C.; King, Robert P..
This paper presents a dynamic principal-agent analysis of an incentive system for Salmonella control in the pork supply chain. The incentive system determines quality premiums to the producer, testing frequencies for hogs delivered, as well as charges to the producer for testing and penalties. Using cost estimates and technical parameters, we evaluate the cost effectiveness of plant and farm control measures and trade-offs between prevalence reduction and related costs and gains. We also assess the impact of ownership structure on incentive system parameters and performance for a wide range of prevalence threshold levels. Differences in control actions, bacteriological prevalence and the overall welfare gain for the chain are very small across ownership...

CHANGES IN RETAIL FOOD DELIVERY: SIGNALS FOR PRODUCERS, PROCESSORS AND DISTRIBUTORS AgEcon
Kinsey, Jean D.; Senauer, Benjamin; King, Robert P.; Phumpiu, Paul F..
This paper contains two chapters related to changes in retail food delivery and sales. The first discusses trends in consumer demographics and lifestyles and how these continue to drive changes in the way food is prepared and delivered to consumers. Retail stores are responding with new formats: providing more ready to eat foods; more convenient store layouts; lower prices and better service in niche markets across the country. Their demands send signals up the food chain to processors and producers that alter their production and inventory decisions. Electronic information technology speeds these changes and leads to more efficient operation with, allegedly, better service for consumers. The second chapter discusses how advances in information...

CONVENIENCE STORE PRACTICES AND PROGRESS WITH EFFICIENT CONSUMER RESPONSE: THE MINNESOTA CASE AgEcon
Ashman, Sara M.; King, Robert P..
The adoption of Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) practices by Minnesota convenience store (C- store) is explained in this study. Data were collected through a mail survey distributed to more than 250 Minnesota C-stores ranging in size from single, independently owned stores to over 100 store chains. The survey instrument was developed to collect data on the following components important to C-store operations and the implementation of ECR: information systems, ordering, receiving, inventory management, and pricing practices. Findings are presented from three distinct perspectives: 1. Location: Rural C-stores, which often meet customer needs that were once met by small supermarkets, carried a wider range of products and offered more services than...

Distinguished Fellows Address: Climate change policy and the science of design AgEcon
King, Robert P..
Climate change has the potential to drive transformations in natural resource access, availability, and use that will have significant, far‐reaching impacts worldwide, not only for those of us living today but also for future generations. As economists we are being called upon to assess the economic impacts of alternative climate change scenarios and the costs of efforts to mitigate and adapt to the adverse consequences of climate change. I classify these professional activities as “economic analysis,” and I cite John Quiggin’s 2011 AAEA Fellows Address (Quiggin 2012) as one of many noteworthy contributions we have made. Equally important, we are being asked to design economic artifacts – institutions, markets, contractual relationships, measuring and...

Executive Compensation Patterns and Practices in Minnesota and Wisconsin Cooperatives AgEcon
Trechter, David D.; King, Robert P..
Cooperatives face unique challenges in compensating managers because it is more difficult to link the financial interests of the manager to those of the cooperative. One way to overcome this challenge is to use performance-based bonuses. This study of cooperatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin found that such bonuses are infrequently used. Further. evidence indicates that existing bonuses tend to be linked more to the size of the cooperative (sales. assets) than to profitability. These results suggest that more attention to this critical area is warranted.

FLEXIBLE, RISK-ORIENTED MARKETING STRATEGIES FOR PINTO BEAN PRODUCERS AgEcon
King, Robert P.; Lybecker, Donald W..
A model designed to identify preferred postharvest marketing strategies for pinto bean producers is presented. The model evaluates flexible strategies that use current market information to determine whether or not storage should continue. Explicit consideration is given to price uncertainty and risk preferences. The results indicate that nearly all decision makers prefer flexible strategies to fixed strategies that call for a predetermined pattern of sales. They also show that the choice of a marketing strategy is sensitive to risk preferences. Initial experiences in making the model available to producers are also discussed.
